Lanthanum phosphoricum: progressive muscular distrophy. Homeopathy 2016.

by Irina Shilova
stairsThe patient is a 30 year old woman who works as a translator. Her main complaint is progressive muscular dystrophy, which began at the age of 12. According to the patient, it started after a quarrel with a friend, which was a great shock. A friend told the whole class that the patient liked a certain boy, and he made fun of her. His mother also told her friends about her and the patient was afraid that they would laugh at her. "At school I was the weakest, the slowest. Nobody loved me." Because of this, she concealed her illness for a long time. Her brother has also a serious disease, cerebral palsy, and she says that people laugh and jeer at him, too.
Her illness began with weakness in the legs; it was hard to climb stairs. The patient cannot get up from a chair or go out independently, and even a small hill is too hard for her to climb. She has been treated with Nandrolone. Her menses stopped five years ago. She has severe headaches, pain in the right hypochondrium, attacks of pancreatitis, constipation, and excessive hair growth on her body. She is slow and depressed, crying every night. She does not like to be told what to do and she protests, since she likes doing things her own way. Her hobby is psychology; she wants people to understand themselves and to “get to the bottom of the problem.” She dreams of the classmates who laughed at her. There are tensions in the family; she is always in conflict with her brother.
Analysis:
This is a serious hereditary disease, incurable in conventional medicine.
She does not like being ordered about, preferring to go her own way, and she wants to get to the bottom of things. All this points to the Lanthanides.
The fact that her friends and classmates were laughing at her, as well as her problems with her brother (who was also laughed at), points to a Phosphorus combination.
The fact that she had such a lack of confidence and felt unable to stand up for herself points to a remedy on the left side of the periodic table, especially Lanthanum.
Prescription: Lanthanum phosphoricum 200C then 1M, 1-2 times per month. I also prescribed a nosode for the disease itself: Dystrophia musculorum progression Nosode.
These remedies were given for 8 months.
Follow-ups:
During this time her mood has improved; she has stopped crying and has become more optimistic. Her stools have normalized. Her gait has become more solid and confident; she is able to walk more and she is less tired. Her headaches have gone, as well as the pain in the hypochondrium.
After one year: she was given Medorrhinum due to the “hiding” aspect; hiding her excess hair growth. She also loves to go to the sea on vacation, a confirmation for Medorrhinum. After Medorrhinum, her menses resumed.
Two years later: her condition continues to improve on frequent doses of Lanthanum Phosphoricum LM.  She is renewing old acquaintances and making a lot of new friends. Her relationship with her brother has improved too, and she helps him with his work. It is becoming easier for her to rise from a chair, and her gait is more confident; she can now walk much longer distances.
The treatment continues.

Cerium oxydatum: arthritis psoriatica. Homeopathy 2016.

by Alex Leupen
The patient is a 53 year old man who came to the clinic for the first time in November 2004, seeking help for his arthritis psoriatica: he has had psoriasis since he was thirteen. He works as an organisational advisor. He later started to study piano, “my childhood dream”. Just before the final exam at the music conservatory, he developed inflammation in his joints:  the small joints of his right hand and wrist, both ankles, and his right knee. Some nails of both hands are affected. His rheumatologist wants to prescribe him Methotrexate.
He is also seeking help through orthomolecular medicine, following a strict diet (no meat, sugar, wine or wheat products, lots of brown rice) and taking many supplements.
His mother felt that there was something wrong with him as a child. “I was supposed to be happy and grateful as a child. If I was angry or sad, she felt like she was not doing her job well, so that wasn’t allowed…!” His mother died some years ago, and that opened up old wounds for him. He was an only child, and he was very jealous, not allowing other children to play with his toys. Now, he is ashamed of his shadow side; the part of him that feels jealous and unfairly treated.
He has periods of depression. “I don’t know what I want to do.” Sometimes, he can be very angry and his reactions are out of proportion. He has two sons, the youngest of whom has congenital malformations and has been operated on three times. This son has demanded a lot of energy from him and his wife, due to the problematic physical and emotional development.
Food and drink:
Desires: Indian food (3), curry (3), coriander (3), fish and meat (3).
Aversions: witlof, Brussels sprouts, endive (all three in his youth).
He is very thirsty. He loves red wine and desires either hot or cold drinks (extremes).
His stools are normal.
As a child he had a poor appetite and constipation, which, in hindsight, he sees as an opposition to his mother (“I was keeping my autonomy.”)
Sleep: He sleeps on his belly. He usually falls asleep easily, and wakes up early (around 5:30 – 6:00). He has recurring dreams of losing his clothes and finding himself naked in company.
Music: He loves classical music, especially Chopin and Schubert. He loves romantic music: “I play passionately,” and he can be moved to tears by music.
Colour preference: Royal blue.
Analysis and follow-up:
It is important to note that the arthritis started just before his conservatory exam: this fits stage 9 (“almost there”) of the Silver series (the series of art and creativity).
Prescription: Rhodium 200K.
Follow-up after 7 weeks: He has more energy and can play piano for 3 hours per day with no problems. The joint pains are 90% improved, and he feels emotionally better.
                                                                             playing
After some doses of Rhodium MK,  the joint pains have dramatically improved and he decides to look for a job with a different organisation bureau. When asked about his basic underlying feeling, he says: “I am outside the world.” He sometimes does not understand human contact at all, and has the feeling that he is in a glass bell. This is an old feeling from his childhood.
Second prescription: Cerium oxydatum MK.
Cerium fits the feeling of being in a glass bell, looking out at the world.  Arthritis psoriatica is an auto-immune illness, and this is a strong indication for prescribing a Lanthanide. The Oxydatum part goes with his childhood feeling of being unfairly treated.
Follow-ups:
After 7 weeks: He has been to an American city on vacation, where he felt belittled and humiliated by a passer-by. After that, he cried for half an hour, which he experienced as a catharsis. His joint pains are much better and he has composed his first piece of music. The remedy was repeated in a MK potency.
After 8 weeks: He has been back to the rheumatologist, who, to his surprise, sees no signs of destruction on the X-rays. He is rethinking his life and his application for a job with a new organisation bureau has been accepted. He is asked to play more and more concerts.
“Through homeopathy, I have much more energy and self-confidence, and I feel much better emotionally. I feel like I am more autonomous and I don’t have the same feelings of being unfairly treated.”
Six years later, he remains stable and content.

Phalaenopsis gigantea: the Hahnemannian proving of Elephant ear orchid. Homeopathy 2016.

by Sally Williams
phalaenopsisDescription and Source:
The most widely grown orchids in the world are the species and hybrids of Phalaenopsis. Phalaenopsis gigantea or “Elephant Ear Orchid” is native to Borneo and was first described in 1909. Named for its gigantic leaves that easily exceed 60 centimeters, it is the largest of the Phalaenopsis species. The massive leaves are pendent, leathery, broadly rounded, pale silver green and shiny on both surfaces, resembling “elephant ears”. An epiphyte; it can be found growing in the tops of trees with the massive roots wrapped around branches for support. In Borneo, the humidity is high and rainfall is plentiful, although there is a drier season usually towards the middle part of the winter. Generally, the plants grow with steeply tilted leaves to shed water in order to prevent crown rot from occurring. The flowering season is heaviest in the summer; the plant can bloom from 4-6 months at a time. A typical Phalaenopsis gigantea flower has a natural spread of about five centimeters. The flowers tend to have a cream or yellow background with varying degrees of green around the column. The flowers have full, round petals that are about equal in size, are usually overlapping and have raised red-brown spots or blotches that can be felt with the fingers. Mature plants are capable of producing hundreds of flowers on branching stalks reaching 40 centimeters.
Commentary:
The decision to prove Phalaenopsis gigantea arose from the theory that orchids who mimic animals or have animal names may address learning disabilities, even autism. The two successful cases I have seen of this remedy were for a child on the Autistic spectrum who was obsessed with elephants and an adult whose inabilities to communicate and learn well led him to become depressed and withdraw from family and friends.
The central idea of Phalaenopsis gigantea is confusion with a lack of comprehension and difficulty in concentration, learning, retaining information, writing, and speaking. The proving participants were enrolled in a homeopathic college. During the proving each one temporarily had trouble learning and retaining information as if they had learning disabilities. There was also difficulty with memory, a fogginess of mind and a dullness of senses, “not able to listen and remember almost as though I cannot hear”. A patient given Phal-gig with success described it as “a feeling of being underwater”.
Taking tests was difficult and many of them failed an exam, but were able to take the test again and pass when the proving was over. Yet one prover with a history of ADD did very well during the proving and many of his concentration difficulties were subsequently curatively resolved.
In addition, there was frustration over the inability to communicate -- a feeling of being trapped by it with a desire to, but inability to escape. These trapped feelings and scenarios came out in many of the dreams of provers. The primary source of these feelings is a sense that they can’t communicate effectively and are misunderstood. There was irritability over misunderstandings, provoking arguments with co-workers, friends and spouse. The more intense the inability to communicate became the more the provers tended to withdraw. Ultimately, they felt lost and directionless, feeling as if they did not belong.

Cerium carbonicum: idiopathic purpura. Homeopathy 2016.

by Patricia Le Roux
Dora Lou is age 8 when idiopathic purpura is diagnosed on January 7th, 2008. She is brought to me by her mother, who raises Dora Lou and her small brother on her own. The purpura is diagnosed following a bad cold in December 2007. (Theme: problems with platelets: Lanthanides). The platelets are very low (4 giga/l) and the child is treated with cortisone, 20 mg per day for four days. A few days later, the platelets have gone up to 48 Gi/l and Dora goes back to school.
On the 11th of January, large bruises reappear. At the hospital, the platelets are tested at 6 Gi/l and the cortisone is increased to 20 mg, 3 times per day, finishing on the 23 rd of January. The cortisone is then stopped and platelets are measured on February 13 at 5 Gi/L. The mother writes to me saying that she is not receiving clear guidance from the hospital and that she lives in fear of an imminent hemorrhage. Dora is very weak. (Theme: Fear of new situations).  She then sees a nearby homeopath who prescribed Ledum palustre 9CH, Phosphorus 12 CH and Arnica 7CH for 8 weeks.
First consultation: March 24, 2008
cocoonThe mother asks for help, so that Dora can have sufficient platelets without a threat to her life (Theme: fear of a new situation). Dora is an independent but awkward child, who does not really know how to handle conflicts. She avoids conflicts and never takes part in fights; she withdraws, both at school and in family surroundings. She has always been very independent and asked for freedom. Ever since her youth, she regularly travels on her own to Canada to visit her father. Her parents divorced when she was 2 years old and her mother never talks nicely about the father.
“I have a hard life,”’ the mother says, “I have organized a cocoon around those two children, they have been so badly abandoned!” (Theme: cocoon). The father left her for another woman and never recognized the two children.
Dora is not particularly brilliant and she is very timid at school, always on the look-out. At home, she has the male role, as the older child. She is also very frightened of new situations, even new food. She changed school last year for primary school and that was terrible for her. She adapted well, however, and wanted to do it herself, as her mother said. The mother herself says that she is scared of this new pathological situation. (Theme: Fear of the new, officially has to do it herself).
Food desires: Dora craves meat and fruit.
Analysis:
-  Lanthanides: She is independent and she suffers from an auto-immune disease, both of which point to the Lanthanides.
-  Stage 4: timid (timidity indicates Stage 2 to 5). She wants to have little contact with others, in order to have freedom: “out of contact” is a strong indication for Cerium (cocoon). She is also very frightened in new situations.
-  Carbon: this story is strongly connected with the father, indicating Carbon. The lack of self-confidence and timidity also point in this direction.
Prescription: Cerium carbonicum 200 C
Follow up:
2nd consultation, May 28: The platelets are slowly going up; there has been another course of cortisone at the beginning of May, as the platelets count dropped under 10 gi/L
Prescription: Cerium Carbonicum 1M
-3rd consultation, July 11: Dora’s mother emails: “We have just had the last results for Dora: the platelets are up to 97 Gi/L. It’s really a very big change, and the progress has been really visible these last weeks after the Cerium 1M.  We will come to see you in September and see how things are going. We all thank you from all our heart, and hope you have a lovely summer.  From the now very happy family of Dora.”
-4th consultation
Dora is seen in September 2008; her platelets have returned to normal and she has had no more problems since then.

Europium oxydatum: ulcero-hemorrhagic rectocolitis. Homeopathy 2016.

by Ramon Frendo
A. is a thirty year old woman, married and mother of one child – she works as a physiotherapist. She comes due to ulcero-hemorrhagic rectocolitis, which started in 2000; she was then 20.
“I started to have blood in my stools, I had intermittent bouts of abundant rectal hemorrhage. For several years, I didn’t do any tests because my doctor thought it was severe hemorrhoids problems, despite the fact that I had 4 to 6 stools a day. In 2005, that went up to 10 stools a day; I was bleeding dry. I went to see another doctor, who sent me for a coloscopy. I was then diagnosed with ulcero-hemorrhagic rectocolitis.”
She was prescribed Pentasa and Betnesol, which did not bring any relief. She also took Turmeric capsules.
Despite the treatment with Pentasa, she continues to suffer a hemorrhagic crisis once a month. She remains anemic with a marked aggravation during her periods, which are heavy. “I’ve taken the pill from the age of 17 to 27. I had my first period when I was 13. I first got pregnant with a treatment of Clomid and Duphaston, but the pregnancy failed.
Medical history:
-         severe rectal pains; must sit or lie down
-         tired, irritable, weak
-         feels defeated
-         crisis of hyperthyroidism; losing weight despite eating a lot
-         no major antecedent
-         Hepatitis B vaccine
Family history:
-         Mother: 1955, treated by antidepressants and Lexomyl. She has always had digestive problems; gastritis, hemorrhoids
-         Father: 1953, suffers from osteoarthritis; coxarthrosis with hip replacement
-         Several cases of digestive cancer: maternal grandfather and paternal uncle
General:
Her personality is joyous and energetic, also complaining and irritable, alternating busyness and tiredness: “When I was young, I had tantrums.” She is a perfectionist.
Her parents divorced when she was 24. She had been working as a physiotherapist for a year.
Ramon Frendo (RF): What affects you the most?
A: “My parents’ separation. It was so unexpected, so incomprehensible, a lack of communication.”
RF: What was your reaction?
A: “I was saddened… I felt betrayed by my mother, who left my father. I would have preferred that they had argued in front of us. I feel angry inside.
RF: What do you mean by ‘perfectionist’?
piano playingA: “I wanted to be perfect in relation to my older sister, who was academically gifted. I was obsessed by it; I was always first of the class and first of my year. Meanwhile, I had low self-esteem, I felt like I had no worth. My sister, who was considered more intelligent than me, has failed in everything. She failed her pharmacist studies and now she is just a pharmacist’s helper.”
RF: What about your childhood?
A: “I was always on the move. I wanted to learn the piano but I was told that it would be my sister who would learn it. I finally learned it, despite my parents saying that she would be better.”
RF: What about your relationship with your sister?
A: “It’s fine now but for a long time there was much jealousy. We fought until I was 20. She would look for me and then I would beat the hell out of her. Since I had more energy and I was stronger, I dominated her. I’ve tried to suppress the fact that my parents preferred my sister. I’m still upset with my mother. Until she failed her studies, they thought she was infallible.”
RF: Do you sleep well? Any dreams?
A: “I sleep well. I have a dream where I am being pursued by people who want to kill me (with firearms, or I’m being beaten). It’s as if I was able to change the scenario. In the dream, I’m still the master and they can never catch me. I manage to hide but the pursuit never stops. In another dream, I have a task that I cannot do. It’s either smuggling or trying to get something out of someone, and I’m being threatened.”
RF: What is your relationship with money?
A: “My mother often frightened me with money: “if we do that, we’ll end up in the street; if we don’t work enough, we’ll have to sell the house…” I’m always afraid of losing money. In life, however, I experience people as beautiful and kind. I give everything and sometimes I’m taken advantage of. I’ve got to be much stricter with people.”
RF: How did you studies go?
A: “I worked a lot, all the time. I forced my husband to eat at my desk while I continued to work. After each exam, I felt I hadn’t done well enough, I wanted to control everything.
RF: Can you tell me more about this?
A: “I’ve been able to study physiotherapy because my sister had failed her pharmacy studies. My parents thought that studying was too expensive. I wanted to know everything, anatomy, etc… I can’t stand mistakes. If I make a mistake, it will cost us. To work independently is much better for me. I don’t want to be ordered around.”
Analysis
1: Auto-immune illness; pre-cancerous; ulcero-hemorrhagic recto-colitis.
2: She wants to dominate; Gold series or Lanthanides; control and mastery direct towards the Lanthanides.
3: The first dream could fit stage 12, Dysprosium. Dysprosium can feel attacked either with a knife or with bare hands but he fights back until the end to maintain his autonomy. Here, she does not fight but hides and the pursuit never ends. One could think of a partial retreat, which could fit stage 13, Holmium.
4: The second dream indicates being on a mission, which could fit stage 9, Europium. It is, however, a particular mission: smuggling or getting something out of someone.
5: She has money issues; fear of losing it, of being short of money, having to sell the house. She also contradicts herself: she gives everything but she’s afraid of being short of money. Contradictions direct towards auto-immune illnesses and therefore, towards the Lanthanides; domination, control, mastery.
6: She yearns for perfection with the subsequent fear of making mistakes, which in turn pushes her to study ceaselessly. Study, intelligence, knowledge and science direct towards Europium.
If we add to this: stools, blood, fear of lacking money, smuggling, and corruption, we are directed towards Oxygen.
Prescription: Europium oxydatum 100K, once every two weeks for a month.
In Europium oxydatum, we find an analogy between the fear of losing money and the loss of stools, blood, life; the fear of losing everything.
Follow-ups:
Three months later: A radical change has taken place. Within 4 days, the rectal hemorrhages have stopped. She has discontinued her allopathic treatment. From the seventh day, she feels much better, quieter, more peaceful. She casts a gentler gaze on her family history, her parents and her sister.
Prescription: continue Europium oxydatum 1000K
Eight months later: No remaining symptoms: normal stools; family life and work are going pleasantly well.
She comes to see me because she would like a second child and she wishes the pregnancy to go well.
Prescription: Europium oxydatum 1000K, every two months.

Terbium metallicum: psoriasiform eczema and tinnitus. Homeopathy 2016.

by Ulrich Welte
gentlemanHe is a good medical doctor, middle aged, well built, well controlled, well dressed, well respected, and very successful; a real gentleman. One of his hobbies is acupuncture. He suffers from a bad crusty and itching skin eruption, which started 3 years ago in the sacral region and slowly spread all over his body in a stricly symmetric fashion. Virtually, only his face and hands are now spared. It is a real nuisance for him because he has to cover himself all the time to avoid strange looks from his patients. The eruption and the itching is worse in bed in the evening, from perspiration, from slight touch, and from warmth. The dermatologist and the university had diagnosed psoriasiform eczema and prescribed steroid creams. The skin improved but as soon as he stopped using it, things got even worse. Then, he tried classical homeopathy with a renowned homeopath but without success. He says: “I dislike the dermatological treatment because it does not cure, it only suppresses the symptoms. I’m sorry to say that the homeopath also failed, he is very sincere. Then, I tried Sulfur on my own but it did not help my skin. The only improvement is that I can drink alcohol now, which formerly caused a headache after the very first glass of wine. What a pity that I don’t drink! I take alcohol only on rare occasions and eat vegetarian food.”
Another problem is tinnitus, a whooshing noise in his right ear. It is definitely worse after sleep. He says he has no specific stress. As he comes across as a rather debonaire, jovial man, this seems very probable, although he says that it gets worse after discussions in his team.
When asked if there was any other skin problem before, he remembers that he had cracks in the tips of his thumbs for 10 years; they subsided when his eczema began.
His colour preference is a light blue, 16B.
Analysis and progress:
His insight in the non-curative nature of suppressive treatment, as well as his openness towards homeopathy and his interest in acupuncture qualify him as a possible Lanthanide case. His free attitude and trying a remedy on his own when his homeopath failed is also quite typical for a Lanthanide. The pathology of skin eruption is not specific to Lanthanides but does not contradict it. Tinnitus can be Silver or Gold series, including the Lanthanides. Which stage? His well-balanced nature and his former cracks seemed to indicate stage 10. The strictly symmetric pattern of the eruption seemed to support this. The cover-up nature is a sycotic sign, which indicates a middle stage, most likely stages 9-11. So, Gadolinium, the  stage 10 Lanthanide, was chosen. As he had previously responded favourably to Sulphur and has its modalities, worse in bed in the evening and from warmth.
Prescription: Gadolinium sulphuricum C200.
Follow-up:
A severe aggravation sets in during the first night, burning and itching, so severe that he uses antihistamines. Then, things get much better. He uses Gadolinum sulphuricum LM6, as needed, but after 6 weeks, he has a severe relapse. Without re-evalution, I prescribe Dysprosium sulfuricum LM6, the stage 12 Lanthanide, a rather offhand choice, but it helps.
After 2 months, he tells me that his skin and itching are 90% better, and he is very satisfied. It is only then that I learn that in the meantime he went back to his classical homeopath and got a single remedy without being told what it was, which he disliked – “Why should not he tell me?” – and which he says did not do anything. Then, he purchased Dysprosium sulphuricum, and afterwards the improvement started. His tinnitus, however, did not improve.
Three months later, he remains on the same level: 90% improvement of skin, tinnitus unaffected. Only then, do I realize that during interviews there is always a kind of tangible tension, as if he has to control the situation and cannot let go, even for a moment, although this happens in a very polite gentlemanly way. This is Terbium, stage 11. The tension is not unpleasant, as in Dysprosium, who suspects every move and retaliates hard at the slightest provocation, which makes you always feel on guard. In his case, the control was so subtle and so polite that I did not see it. Indeed, I realize only now that he had always been in charge of the anamnesis from the very start and controlled every follow-up in the same way; he told me only what he thought was important and gave me very little chance to intervene by taking full charge of the situation.
So, I now give him Terbium metallicum C200.
After another 6 weeks, he is very satisfied. Not only his skin is perfect but his tinnitus has also gone. He says that he has been hearing the rushing noise again since a few days but previously it was completely gone.
I prescribe Terbium LM6, to be taken as needed.
Nine months have passed, during which he had to take the remedy 5-6 times. Each time, it helped promptly. After another year, he sends me a very polite letter with a video, which documents the skin before and after. It is well documented, well filmed, and well cut: the professional video of a real gentleman.

Neodymium sulphuricum in 10 cases. Homeopathy 2016.

by Jan Scholten
woman freedom logoIn this article, Neodymium sulphuricum will be discussed as an example of one of the Lanthanides. This remedy is frequently needed in our culture. Neodymium as such is the most prescribed Lanthanide in our practice. This has to do with the fact that our culture demands that people prove themselves. Situations are stressful, work has to be done fast, and people are frequently subjected to new challenges. The idea of calmly doing your job for many years has become a rarity. These qualities of ‘challenge’ and ‘proving’ are found in stage 6, where we find the Lanthanide, Neodymium. Neodymium sulphuricum is often indicated for women. In our present culture, women are gaining their freedom but many of them still have to fight for it in their intimate relationships. This is one of the basic themes of Neodymium sulphuricum: they have to prove their autonomy in marriage, they have to fight for their freedom in relationships. The remedy is really a remedy for the women’s liberation movement. The following 10 cases show different aspects of Neodymium sulphuricum. In many of them, we will see the theme of women fighting for their autonomy and independence, in marriage and love affairs.
Case 1
Woman, 40, premenstrual syndrome.
She is depressed and needs support to maintain her trust in love and relationship. She is irritable towards her children before the menses. She is a homeopath, having chosen this profession because of the holistic and individualistic aspects of homeopathy. She has been divorced, leaving the marriage as she felt limited and narrowed down. Independence, freedom, self-reliance, and making her own decisions are very important for her; it is necessary for her to make a connection with herself, to know who she is.
In this case, we see the theme of fighting (Stage 6) for her freedom and against limitation (Lanthanides) in her marriage (Sulphur). The Lanthanide themes are also found in being a homeopath, holistic, individual aspects, and the need for independence and freedom.
Case 2
Woman, 20, diarrhea.
She easily has diarrhea, < stress, < sauerkraut, fish, tomato. She has acne on her face and back. She has vaginitis, burning pain. She has amenorrhea, < after using contraceptives for a while. She likes adventures and challenges. She is an artist, studying at an academy. She has an aversion to being forced; she wants to go her own way. She has had a boyfriend but she stopped the relationship because he was pushing her too much. She had very good contact with her father but her mother was jealous of this relationship.
The Lanthanide theme is seen here in the desire to go her own way and to not be forced. The theme of being forced was triggered by her boyfriend, which indicates Sulphur. Stage 6 can be seen in her desire for adventures and challenges. The burning pain, the acne and diarrhea confirm Sulphur. The amenorrhea from contraceptives and a hormonal imbalance, confirm the Lanthanides.
 Case 3
Woman, 30, amenorrhea.
She has amenorrhea, < after contraceptives, and she is anxious about being infertile. She has a bit of anorexia and is very controlling with food. She has a fear of becoming obese and unattractive. She has stomach pains and rumbling, < evening, < lying. She has had a boyfriend but stopped the relationship because he became too dependent on her. She has an anxiety to commit herself, fearing that she will miss her freedom. She is apprehensive of starting another relationship, for fear that it will go wrong again, but she wants to prove that it can be successful. Her parents had a difficult relationship and she felt their tensions.
The aversion to committing herself or losing her freedom points to the Lanthanides. It is connected with boyfriends and partners, which indicates Sulphur. The desire to prove that it will still work is an indication for Stage 6. Hormonal problems, such as amenorrhea in this case, are also an aspect of the Lanthanides. The anorexia is also an aspect of Lanthanides: it is the desire for control, an obsessive compulsive disorder.
Case 4
Man, 40, arthritis.
He has arthritis of his shoulders, wrists, hands, metacarpal and proximal inter-digital joints, < tired, < stress, < exertion, <<< after a hepatitis B vaccination. He works as a nurse and likes to work independently. As a student he wanted to prove himself. He likes to keep everything under control. In his marriage, he has ups and downs, he often feels hurt and powerless. After Neodymium sulphuricum, he sees his wife in a new light, with gratitude, and they have a few weekends with a lot of talks and emotions and weeping, which clarifies things between them.
Stage 6 is obvious in his desire to prove himself. Three previously prescribed Neodymium were palliating but not curative. The Lanthanides are indicated by the arthritis, which in 70% of cases is auto-immune. It can also be seen in his desire to work independently and his desire to keep things under control. In this case, I struggled a long time to get the right remedy. I gave him Neodymium nitricum, Neodymium oxydatum, Neodymium fluoratum, Praseodymium fluoratum and Samarium fluoratum, all with palliative effects. It is only when he spoke about his marriage problems more clearly that the sulphuricum aspect became evident – previously he spoke in a casual way about his marriage situation.
                                                                                 freedom
Case 5
Woman, 30, ankylosing spondylosis.
She has pains in her hips, sacroiliac joints, and dorsal region; a feeling of cramps and stabbing as from knives, as if overexerted, < citrus fruits, < turning in bed. The spondilitis started after an unhappy love affair: she was very much in love but her partner was not, and he had other affairs. She continued the relationship despite the advice of all her friends. She felt closed in, standing stiff with her arms along her body; she could not express herself for fear he would not like her anymore.
The ankylosing spondilosis, as an auto-immune disease, is an indication for Lanthanides. The disease started after an unhappy love affair, indicating Sulphur. The way she handled the situation was like a forcing: even when he clearly was not in love and had other affairs, she still tried to keep the relation going. This ‘forcing’ aspect is typical of Stage 6.
Case 6
Woman, 40, polymyalgia rheumatica.
She has pains in her thighs, lumbar region, sides, and arms, < turning in bed, < walking, unable to do anything. She has arthritis of her hands, metacarpal and proximal interdigital joints. She is tired; she wakes at 5 a.m. tired, << from having worked too hard for many years in healing massage. She is divorced because she is a lesbian; for many years she wanted to prove with her marriage that she was ‘normal’. She wanted to be independent, to have her own practice and be autonomous but she could hardly relax.
The polymyalgia rheumatica, as an auto-immune disease, is an indication for Lanthanides. For many years, she tried to prove that she was ‘normal’ by being married. Proving oneself is Stage 6; in the marriage, indicates the Sulphur aspect. The desire to be independent and autonomously is typical for Lanthanides, as is her work in healing massage. Waking at 5 a.m. fits Sulphur.
Case 7
Man, 25, psoriasis.
He has psoriasis – itching and scaling on his elbows, ear, eyebrows, and head; it is annoying. It started after a party weekend with lots of alcohol and unsafe sex. He is always looking for challenges, putting himself to the test. He is doing things for the greater cause, starting companies to make the world better. When he was 6 years old, his parents moved and he felt homeless. He was bullied until he hit the biggest of the bullies; since that time, he feels bound by nothing. He likes to be seen as social and warm, and he likes to help people. His parents divorced when he was 13; the children were all that held the marriage together.
He is always looking for challenges, putting himself to the test, which is Stage 6. He is doing things for the greater cause, to make the world better: a Gold series and Lanthanides quality. Since he was 6 years old, he feels bound by nothing, again a Lanthanides theme, but he still wants to be seen as social and warm, which indicates Sulphur.
Case 8
Woman, 40, ulcerative colitis.
She has colitis with thin, bloody stools, < alcohol, < rich food and cream, < stress. She has also stomach pain, squeezing and pain and heaviness in her heart; this is from stress in her marriage. Her husband is jealous, harassing her for days until she gives in and starts crying. She feels he wants to put her in a cage, a box. She has been fighting him to be able to do what she wants, to get her freedom. As a child, she was pleasing others - her parents and teachers – but she was mischievous too, to her sister. She is a homeopath and likes to have deep contact with colleagues and friends. She likes congresses, where she can go out and have a good time with colleagues. It satisfies her need to feel free and to go out. Her biggest fear is to be held down: that provokes the bleeding.
Here again, we see a woman fighting against her husband for her freedom: Neodymium sulphuriucm, or more generally a Lanthanide sulphuricum. The ulcerative colitis is an auto immune disease, a Lanthanide aspect. ‘Deep contact’ fits Lanthanides too, the deep aspect. The ‘fight’ fits stage 6. It could also be Stage 8 or 12, but it is definitely on the left side of the periodic table because she has not yet reached her goal. A confirmation for Stage 6 is her mischievous quality in her youth.
Case 9 Woman, 45, hepatitis C.
The hepatitis came from an injection with antibiotics: it gave her liver pain, a tearing, cutting pain. She has palpitations and her left atrium is dilated. In her first marriage, her husband controlled everything. He was jealous and kept her home. She felt like a bird in a cage; it was a tragedy. They had lots of fights and once she threw a knife at him; he got anxious and she lost all feelings for him. They divorced. In her second marriage, she is the one making all the decisions.
She felt encaged in her marriage. ‘Encaged’ points to Lanthanides; ‘in her marriage’ indicates Sulphur. The ‘fighting her way out’ and ‘getting into freedom’ is an indication for Stage 6. The heart problems and palpitations fit Sulphur.
Case 10
Woman, 60, rheumatoid arthritis.
She has pains in her joints: arms, shoulder, hands, and fingers. She has pain in her left hip, when walking too long and pain in her sacro-iliac joint when rotating her leg. She has had many relationships with men, but when it started to become official she went into resistance, even when she was very much in love. She hated the idea of being bound to a man, feeling that she would not be able to give him what he needed and that she would not be free. She hates being given orders and she has often stood up boldly against authorities on purpose. She hates hypocrisy and lies.
She does not continue relationships when they become official because then she would not be free. ‘Not free’ is a sign of Lanthanides, ‘in a relationship’ points to Sulphur. One could think of Stage 4 in this case because she stops when the relationship becomes official. ‘Official’ is a concept of Stage 4, but even though she has relationships that she does not want to offialise, she continues a few steps further in the relationship. It is more like Stage 6, which we also see in bold behaviour. Bold is a typical aspect of Stage 6. She goes against authority (Lanthanides) on purpose, as if to prove her autonomy.
                                                           freedom3
Conclusion In these cases, we can see many aspects coming together.
The theme of auto-immune diseases, as seen in all the cases, points to the Lanthanides: ulcerative colitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and ankylosing spondylosis.
The theme of freedom and autonomy is prominent in all cases. This theme is essential for Lanthanides and it plays a central role in the cases: it is the causative factor.
The theme of service is also prominent. Two cases are of homeopaths, another is doing healing massage, and another is starting companies to improve the world. The serving quality is not essential - it is confirmatory, but not always present. Whether it will be expressed depends on the level of evolution of the patient.
In all cases, we can see problems in relationships and marriage; a key factor for Sulphur.
Nine out of the ten cases are women. I think this is not due to the remedy as such, but to our culture. Men have already been independent for a long time in our culture. For women, however, there can still be the need to fight for their autonomy and independence, in relationships and marriage.
What has not been shown in this article is the type of personality of Neodymium sulphuricum. They possess an inner strength. They can even give the impression that they are quite sure of themselves. They have a tendency to hide their insecurity behind an image of boldness and over-confidence. They often have a boyish quality. Lanthanides in general have an androgynous quality, so women tend to look a bit more masculine and they tend to look young.

Hospital will be the end of me; a case of Staphylotoxinum. Homeopathy 2016.

by Katharina Riedener
white blossomsA. a 53 year old woman came in September 2009, presenting with a large fist-sized ganglion in her left hip. Her color preference is white C20/21: “I love white, the colour of spring and new growth.”
A: “I don’t want to go  anywhere near surgery, that would be the end of me. I had a tonsillectomy when I was 12 and I almost died; I haemorrhaged and I also had a staphylococcus infection (osteomyelitis) of the left femur which killed the bone marrow.
I had extremely high fever for 3-4 weeks, 106 degrees Farenheit. I was in and out of consciousness; they told my parents that if I survived I would be a vegetable, but I surprised them. None of the medications were working; I heard them say that they wanted to do a bone marrow transplant and I told them that I wasn’t going to let them do it: that night my fever broke. I could never donate blood because I was on such strong antibiotics.
“I feel that if I have to have another surgery I will not survive it. When I had my babies I didn’t want to go to the hospital because I was afraid I wouldn’t come out alive. Chemical narcotics don’t work for me: I woke up during the tonsillectomy, I was walking off the table. When I have dental work done they have to over-anaesthetize me because my metabolism works too fast. I was on strong morphine for a long time and it would only last 20 minutes! I don’t like being out of control, I am a control freak. I am pig-headed and I have an A type personality.
“If I would die I would go to heaven. When I was 12 I had an out-of-body experience: I walked with Jesus and I asked him why I was still here, since I had tried to die three times. His answer was that it was not my time yet.”
Medical history:
“I had encephalitis about 25 years ago, out of the blue with no prior illness. I was sleeping on a cot and I suppose it could have been from an insect bite. I had high fever and couldn’t move my neck. I was given another heavy load of antibiotics and recovered fully.
“I had another brain infection in 1997; the nerves in my face and head were not working well, I couldn’t see, and I had unbearable pain so I was in and out of hospital. It turned out that it was an infection of the trigeminal nerve originating from a tooth infection. I was given Demerol and Morphine but the effects would only last 20 minutes; they used to give me injections into the left cheek, hitting the trigeminal nerve. I also lost the feeling in my right arm. The doctors were going to do surgery to sever the major nerves of my face.
“I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis at 18 and was put on a strong medication that burned a hole in my stomach; that’s when I started to search for natural therapies. I also have restlesss leg syndrome. I have calcium deposits on my bones and teeth, and some of my vertebrae are fused (L7 and L8) so I can’t bend my back easily.”
Fears:
“I have a fear of dying in hospital. I have some claustrophobia, which is extreme in tight spaces where one has no control: I want to be in control of myself.”
Food:
“I love fish and chicken and occasionally I will have red meat. I have stopped eating sugar, and I don’t usually have white flour. I have always watched what I ate and I’ve never been a big drinker. I have never been drunk in my life, that will never happen; it’s control thing, I would feel sick if I was drunk.”
Pain:
“Stabbing pain goes from my lumbar area all the way down the leg, first the right leg, then the left.  The pain goes to the side of the weakness. I have pain my my left groin where the muscles are attached to the bone.  Lateral movement is terribly painful and rotating movements are not good. At first I thought I had a vein problem or an inguinal hernia. My femur muscles are trying to pull the muscles off my knee cap for two years now.  It reminds me of when I had Osteomyelitis. Before that I was asymptomatic! I want to be able to walk and run, it is killing me to not be able to do my usual activity. My hip is becoming progressively worse. I get some relief from a chiropractor, who says that the problem is the muscles these days and not the bones – he says that my muscles are tighter than a ball.”
Sleep and dreams:
“If I am in a lot of pain I cannot sleep. The only dream that I remember is of falling from something, but I never land.”
Temperature:
“I have always been cold from the inside out, like an ice cube. I just can’t handle being cold. My whole body becomes so cold that I freeze my husband out of bed. I love the sun, I am a sun worshipper.”
Initial Prescription: Opium LM 5
Follow-ups:
April 2010: Color preference: 21C, 17C
Last night, I was in excruciating pain from my hip down the left side after spending so much time in an airplane. The altitude bothers me if I am flying in a smaller plane. I have shin splints above my ankle, and I needed to put my feet up to get the blood circulating.
These growths continue to increase; they are growing into my abdomen now. They have been diagnosed as ganglions, 2 anterior, 1 posterior. I need to keep moving, but that is contraindicated if you have growths. There is more restriction, so movements cause pain.
The feelings remind me of when I was 12 years old and I had what was supposed to be a simple tonsillectomy but I had a haemorrhage and encephalitis. I wasn’t supposed to live after that, and I was supposed to be a mental vegetable. The nurses had given up on me and my brother came in to give me baths. I had a high fever for three weeks and most of my hair fell out. Even the antibiotics and the morphine shots didn’t work, that’s why I don’t take drugs since they just mask your symptoms.”
Staph. aureusAt this point, it was clear to me that the growths had to do with the Stapylococcus aureus infection after her tonsillectomy (encephalitis). I looked up Vermeulen’s ‘Monera’ which lead me to the remedy Staphylotoxinum, which has the symptom: “Haemorrhage, blood non-coagulable”. Staphylococcus aureus produces an alpha toxin with haemolytic properties and necrosis of the skin.
Prescription: Staphylotoxinum 12 CH daily
June 2010:
“I have been taking the remedy for about one week now and I feel so much better, stronger and happier! I have less pain and I think the tumours are shrinking.”
July 2010:
“I continue to feel better. The masses have become more solid but they are smaller now; before that I could feel them growing. I have been sleeping better and have not needed to take any pain medication. I can walk my dog again, whereas I couldn’t because of the pain in the past. I have days where I feel wired and jittery from having too much coffee, and from my menstrual cycle, but my restless legs are pretty good. My energy is good and I’m not dragging myself around anymore. This is the best treatment I’ve had so far.”
September 2010:
“I am so impressed – the lumps have shrunk more than 75% - I might even get my legs back!”
November 2010:
Improvement continues and there is no more pain in her hip. She has not had another dose of the remedy since October 201
March 2011:
A. is back to doing normal activities including yoga with no pain or discomfort other than the feeling that one hip is not as strong as the other. No further doses of the remedy have been given.

Backtracking to go in a new direction; a case of Amphisbaena vermicularis. Homeopathy 2016.

by Doug Brown
A young woman, B., who I had been treating with partial success since she was 13 years old, for dysmenorrhea, allergic rhinitis, and social anxiety, returned to me at the age of 18 in March 2008. She was now married and 36 weeks pregnant. She told me that she was upset, congested, and not happy about anything. Fortunately, this visit provided me with the opportunity to perceive her state more deeply. These are her words:
“I have a bad attitude. I’m not happy about making myself beautiful, getting dressed in the morning. I’m angry at everything and I don’t know why. I asked M. (my husband) to stir the oatmeal, and he didn’t use the spoon I had in mind. I’m used to my routine and am not willing to allow any variation.  Something is off, wrong. It’s not going like normal.
“I find something wrong in everything, in little details that don’t matter. I act superior, as if I have a better method. I don’t state my expectations and then I blame others, even though it’s my fault. I have to change in the middle, and figure out how to deal with a different situation. I have difficulty dealing with change.  I put so much into planning; I always have to have a plan, otherwise I feel unprepared and then I don’t know what to do. It’s a mental thing, getting my mind around an idea. I’m not ready to go in that direction. It’s a struggle…how to let go of what I had in mind. I can’t SWITCH from one idea to another. There’s a step-by-step thing I have to follow.
“I have to backtrack to go in a new direction. I have to go back and get rid of what I had in mind. Then I can go in a new direction. It’s a complex process. If I don’t get rid of what I had in mind…I’m trying to keep….it’s just not compatible. I feel stubborn. I just don’t want to let go. Switching is like a regrouping. There’s a stop in the middle. There’s no smooth transition.
“I dreamt I was in charge of a woman who was working for me. I explained something for her to do, and she didn’t quite get it. It took a long time and I had to redo everything she did. She was happy and positive but never managed to get things done right. I was incredulous! How does she stay happy? She never gets it right!
“All my energy comes from everywhere, and goes to my abdomen. That makes me feel weak. There’s no energy anywhere else. I can’t lift my hands, get up, and walk. The energy is all in one spot.
“Some days, I’m absolutely miserable, on other days I’m fine. I go Back and Forth (HG). It’s like there’s a choice, to go from one experience to the other.”

Analysis:
Although her rigidity and difficulty with change had previously led me to remedies from the Mineral kingdom, I now understood that B. was experiencing a deep division within herself, an inner conflict, which is an aspect of the Animal Kingdom. Also, the rigidity she identifies is not an expression of a need for structure; rather, she says, it is the byproduct of a “complex process”. She lives in a universe where success is equivalent to having one’s way in the trifling details of life, being part of the in-group and not being excluded, being either the good, right person or alternatively being the one who is bad and blamed. Her dream reflects the aspect of dominance vs. submission: she is in charge of another person. But the division within is reflected in these two archetypes: one who is ineffective but happy, the other who is dominant and effective, but perpetually miserable.
The key to this case is her description of the “complex process” of changing direction. It is as if these two archetypes are like two Beings, two sides of herself, who wish to go in opposite directions. She cannot drop one idea for the other, because to drop an idea is to submit one Being to the other.
A group of Animal remedies which includes themes of Right v. Wrong and In-group vs. Excluded is the lizard family.  The theme of persecution also is present in the snake remedies. The Worm Lizards, Family Amphisbaenidae, look like huge earthworms, and their way of moving, either backward or forward, suggests the action of one. Amphis, from the Greek, means on or both sides. Baino means ‘step go’. Thus Amphisbaena means going at both ends by steps. The Liddell and Scott Lexicon translates Amphisbaino as a “kind of serpent that can go both ways.” Indeed, they have been seen to travel in both directions in their subterranean tunnels, moving both forwards and backwards. Locally, they are often called “two-headed snakes” (From Natural History of Animals, in Reference Works, KHA). The best-known rubric for this remedy, “Delusions: body, feet, brain, are in, with headache”, beautifully reflects this confusion of which part of the body leads the way: which is up, or which is down?
Prescription: Amphisbaena 200C, with a daily dose of Sac lac.
Follow-ups:
Four months later, in April 2008, she told me that her labor had lasted only 3 hours, and that her recovery exceeded all expectations. “I was never in pain, or too upset or concerned. I was able to stay really relaxed. I’ve been happy, never angry or upset. Not having a routine doesn’t bother me at all. I feel productive and happy. Although I’m mostly alone (with my baby), I’m happy and doing my own thing. I can’t believe that I’m ME, the way I’ve dealt with the past few weeks. It seems like there’s nothing wrong” (said incredulously).
B. has continued to stay in touch and to do well since then. In Feb. 2010 a 200C was repeated because of a recurrence of some allergy symptoms. In June of that year, I gave her a 1M when she experienced a partial relapse during her second pregnancy, with excellent response.
lizardConclusion:
Lizard remedies are not so well known and easily missed. This, perhaps, is a reflection of their propensity for camouflage and hiding in our natural world. It took me five years and many remedies to find this patient’s simillimum but the results since then have been unequivocally positive. The key to uncovering the remedy was, as usual, an attentiveness to the process and experience behind the facts, the story, and the emotions. Only when we simultaneously grasp both the Whole and the Center can we open the doorway for healing consciousness in our patients.
How do any of us choose our direction? How do we decide whether to attune ourselves to one thought, goal, or impulse, versus competing ideas? The sphere of consciousness of Amphisbeana seems to encompass one way in which this process can become mired in a dualistic struggle reminiscent of Hegel’s Thesis vs. Antithesis, but from which no Synthesis can arise. Prior to receiving the curative remedy, B.’s life was essentially a living expression of this question. Once the simillimum was correctly perceived, she was free to live out a satisfying answer to this question.

Prescribing combination mineral remedies; a case of Natrum iodatum. Homeopahy 2016.

by Mary Ellen Coulter
It is not unusual, even for experienced homeopaths, to have difficulty deciding between several substances, when choosing a mineral remedy. Besides understanding the individual elements, it is helpful to recognize the remedies that are a combination of 2, or even, 3 elements. In addition to the properties of the individual elements, the combination remedy will exhibit its own unique qualities. It is desirable to see several symptoms that can identify the remedy as its own substance, separate from individual components. A fairly common example is the remedy, Calcerea Phosphoricum, which contains well-known aspects of Calcerea Carbonicum (desire for security and protection, structural issues of bones, joints, and teeth, focus on work and responsibility) and Phosphorous (desire for company and communication, fear of the dark and being alone, respiratory symptoms, tendency to anxiety, sympathetic to others, desire for cold drinks, excessive bleeding). While different aspects of each remedy may be present in an individual, there are characteristics that are unique to the combination remedy, Calcerea Phosphoricum (discontent, desire to travel, crave smoked meats, worse when snow is melting, growing pains, headaches and stomachaches). The following case demonstrates an instance where a combination remedy was more successful than one made from a single mineral substance.
FK is a 28 year old female with multiple sclerosis. She is a slim, dark haired young woman, who wears thick glasses and walks into the office with a noticeable limp. She initially appears self-conscious as she describes her struggle with multiple sclerosis and anxiety. FK relaxes slowly as she relates that she is an art teacher who loves to paint abstract pictures. Recently, she moved to teach art at a local community college. This triggered an anxiety disorder that originally began at age 15, when her mother died of breast cancer. Her parents had already been divorced for several years. Her father, who had remarried, told FK that her stepmother did not wish for her to stay with them and FK went to live with her grandparents.
She felt abandoned, very alone, and consoled herself by painting. Expressing a desire to be loved, she started doing drugs and drinking alcohol to overcome her social anxiety and meet people. In her senior year in high school, FK was sent to a treatment program for drug abuse. She mentions that before she received help, she was as close to death as any living person could come. FK began having dizzy spells, blurred vision, and increased anxiety. In addition, there was trouble with her balance, she felt hot, even though her symptoms were worse in the heat, and  she desired being outside in fresh air. With the anxiety, there was obsessive thinking, which she could not erase, especially at night. Mostly these thoughts revolved around issues of security, the future, and whether she could trust her new boyfriend. Her fear of abandonment was tremendous and created insecurity that interfered with her ability to trust that anyone would love her. She also had fear that she could not provide for herself. Despite being very thin, FK reported a huge appetite and particularly craved sugar, which she would eat right out of the bowl. She would dream that her boyfriend left her or cheated on her. She also had dreams of floating through the air.
lonelinessKey points of the case:
- grief from death of mother and abandonment by father
- insecurity in relationship and fear of being alone in life; dreamt boyfriend cheated on her
- fear of providing for self,
- anxiety and insomnia with obsessive thinking
- Multiple Sclerosis; balance and vertigo as main symptoms
- HOT with a ravenous appetite, despite being very thin
- history of relatives surviving the Holocaust
Repertorization:
1- MIND, Ailments from death of parent or friend- combined with
2- MIND, Fear of being alone
3- MIND, Delusion/Dream, floating in air
4- GENERALS, Heat, sensation of
5- GENERALS, sclerosis, multiple
6- STOMACH, Appetite, Ravenous, with emaciation
7- EXTREMITIES, Awkwardness- combined with
8- EXTREMITIES, dragging legs while walking
9- GENERALS, weakness, heat or heated, becoming.
10- EYE, Inflammation, optic nerve
I added a new rubric in the Complete 2009 Repertory: MIND, Fear alone, of solitude
Remedies considered from the analysis are Natrum Muriaticum, Phosphorous, Causticum, and Argentum Nitricum. FK had taken Natrum Muriaticum in the past, before she moved, which was initially helpful, but stopped acting. I wanted to choose a remedy that included how hot she is, the ravenous appetite despite being so thin, and obsessive thinking. The remedy Iodatum covers these features and according to Jan Scolten, Natrum Iodatum has the feeling that they are alone in their fight for existence and struggle for life.
Prescription: one dose of Natrium Iodatum 200c, followed by 6c daily, until symptoms improved.
The remedy created a dramatic improvement in FK’s mental and emotional symptoms; the anxiety was much better, she was able to sleep without obsessive thoughts. She and her boyfriend developed a wonderful relationship; they became engaged. She developed the confidence to apply for a job teaching art at a larger university, with tenure. Physically, the ocular symptoms, limp, and balance improved. There was a relapse of all of the symptoms six months later, when she was applying for the new job, which required making herself vulnerable in the application process and moving to a new city. The remedy was repeated two more times in the 200c dose during this time, at one-month intervals. She was accepted at the school of her choice and symptoms once again improved. The last time I heard from her, six months after the move, she was getting married and doing well in her new location.

Three cases of Radium bromatum. Homeopathy 2016.

by Resie Moonen
CASE ONE
lichen sclerosusMrs E., born in 1939, comes in 2005, because of vulvar lichen sclerosus, which was diagnosed by a dermatologist in 2003. She has a lot of symptoms, especially burning and itching of a white eruption on her labiae. The burning is very intense, worse in bed, worse during the night, worse during heat. She has had several corticosteroid ointments but none of them helped her; the complaint has worsened after two years of this treatment.
Her gynaecologic anamneses shows that it was difficult for her to fall pregnant; she had many strictures around her ovaries. She had one spontaneous pregnancy and is happy with her daughter.
She is menopausal since she was 55 years. When she was 58, she once had a bleed; she had a curettage but the gynaecologist could not find a cause for the bleed.
She is a warm-blooded, hard working woman. She has always had a lot of energy. She worked together with her husband in their own store; long workdays but always full of energy. Now, she still has a desire for sports but she finds it difficult, especially cycling which is impossible because of the painful eruption. She wants to be on the move and to do sport every day.
In 2003, her husband had a treatment for prostate gland carcinoma: the internal radiation ‘seed’ therapy. They shared the same bed during all the months of treatment and it is during that period that the eruption started; first some itching, then intense burning and itching with white discoloration and some stiffness of the labiae. On examination, I observed the white, hard induration on the labiae and on the orifice of the vagina.
Prescription: because of the causation of the eruption, the eruption itself, with the burning and itching, and her energy, I decided to give her Radium bromatum 200K, once a month.
Follow-up: after the remedy, the eruption was more active with more burning, but then the symptoms diminished very quickly. After 2 months, the itching was gone and the eruption reduced. After 5 months, the itching had stopped and the white spots were almost gone.
After 10 months, the lichen sclerosis was cured: she has no more white spots, no itching and burning, and she can ride her bicycle again, without complaints.
CASE TWO:
Mr. B., born in 1958, comes for consultation in 2006 for lichen sclerosus et atroficus of his penis. He has white indurated spots, which are painful with itching, burning and cracked skin. He has the impression that the skin is becoming smaller and shrunken; it is very painful after coition. He has the feeling his skin is being eaten up from the inside.
He has had this problem for the past 3 years. It started after a series of medical for abdominal pain. He had X-rays and several CT scans of the lower abdomen; the only diagnosis given was irritable bowel syndrome. He has periods of severe cramping pains, with rumbling and distension of the abdomen.
Mr. B is a hard working man; he has his own furniture shop and according his wife, he is working night and day. He his a rather shy and timid person, and he feels guilty if he takes free time for himself!
Prescription: because of the possible causation and the sclerotic eruption, I gave him Radium Bromatum 12 K, once a day, 2 granules.
Follow-up: the itching and the eruption diminishes within 2 months. After 8 months, there is no more problem and he rarely takes Radium bromatum 12K, only if there is any itching. The abdominal problems are much better; there are no painful cramping periods anymore. Since 2006, the lichen sclerosus has never returned.
                                                            lichen sclerosus2
CASE THREE:
Mss. M, born in 1958, consulted in 2008, because of Morfea - localised sclerodermia. It started in 2005, first on her lower abdomen and later spread to her arms and legs. First, she had a treatment with Metrotrexate for 3 months, but during that period the eruption got worse. She then got corticosteroid ointments, without effect.
The eruption starts with a spot of red/ blue discoloration of the skin, which then grows: the whole leg and arm becomes bluish-red. The eruption is painful and burning; it gives the sensation of someone prickling with a needle and it feels glowing hot.The skin then becomes indurated and hard, the hairs are falling out, and when the eruption remains for some month,s it has a shining, hard, indurated appearance. More spots  are still appearing on her body, especially on the abdomen.
M. is a hard working woman, the mother of 3 children, who works as a nurse in a home for elderly people. She is shy and timid, especially in big groups of people. When she was younger, she even had a fear of being with strangers. She is very active: she bikes to work and after her work she walks her dogs.
A year before the eruption started she had a lot of X-rays and CT scans for an ovarian cyst. She also had a radio-active isotope examination.
Prescription: Radium bromatum 200K, once in 2 weeks.
Follow-up: after 2 months, the skin has already improved; less stiff and indurated. The stitching in the skin of her legs is gone, as well as the itching and burning. There is no new spots developing. After 5 months, the existing spots are getting smaller and the skin is getting smooth again, without itching and burning. No stitching pain anymore.
Now, after 2 years of treatment (last year, she took Radium bromatum MK once a month), the spots are almost gone, as is the pain and the itching. The colour of the skin is almost normal and the hair has started to regrow! The dermatologist told her the hair would never grow again! Her energy is still good and her self esteem is much better.

Christchurch earthquakes; Gelsemium to the rescue. Homeopathy 2016.

by David Quinn
earthquakeChristchurch was struck by an earthquake on the 4th September last year (2010) and by a second one on the 22nd of February, plus thousands of aftershocks. Many people in Christchurch have reached a state where each significant after-shock is very distressing and upsetting.
Approximately five weeks ago, on the 19th of May, I began to feels pains in my lower back and I was noticeably restricted in my movements. The next day I could hardly move; when I tried to move there was tightness, shooting pains and spasms. The problem seemed to be mostly muscular with a bit of trouble to the nerves, but not in the spine. I suspected a viral or bacterial infection even though I have not experienced muscular pain like this before; when I am unwell it is always a ‘flu-like condition, a headache and soreness all over. I also began to realise that I had been experiencing a very low level of discomfort and slight restriction in movement in my lower back for months. The next night I had a memorable dream: my nephew had found a crocodile and somehow I was assigned the job of looking after it. I spent the whole night dealing with one shocking and frightening event after the next. The next morning my back was still as painful, if not worse, than the day before. The dream made me think of Gelsemium; because of the characteristic effect on the muscles in my lower back I took a dose of Gelsemium 1M. Over the next few days the pain in my back steadily improved. After two days I took another dose of the same potency. As my back continued to improve, the sense of unwellness became a typical ‘flu-like illness; I felt weak and sick and had a mild, non-descript headache. I took another dose of Gelsemium, and every morning I felt better. Within the space of a week I was feeling well and my back pain had cleared up completely. It seemed that quite a severe illness, which may have become protracted, had turned into something far more simple, for which I hardly had to go to bed.
Avon bridgeOn reflection, I remember having had a feeling of tightness and restriction in my back for months. It may also be significant that two days before the onset of the severe pains I was driving home and saw that the River Avon (which runs through Christchurch) was very high and was spilling over onto the roads. This was happening because of extra high lunar tides combined with the fact that parts of Christchurch had undergone extensive damage and had sunk. The river Avon spilling over onto the streets is a very frightening thing and driving past, it looked so high and vast, like the sea.
A few days later a friend said that she felt she was getting the ‘flu: her eyes felt heavy and her mouth felt dry. She said that everything felt heavy, especially her legs. From these symptoms I thought of Gelsemium. The next day she was getting bad pains in her left side, pains she had experienced since the first Earthquake in September. After she described the pains I suspected that they were muscular and I recommended a dose of Gelsemium 1M. Like me, she steadily improved over the next few days. She said that her pains “surprisingly” seemed to disappear while some ‘flu-like symptoms of weakness and sickness remained for a few days. I repeated the dose after two days, and after feeling very tired and sleeping deeply, she steadily began to improve. She said that in the past few months since the earthquakes she had been developing a number of worrying afflictions. Her doctor was worried about the pain in her left side and suspected a blood clot in her lungs, but tests showed nothing but a slight infection. At this stage he suspected pleurisy. In addition to this, an ankle which has suffered from several twists in the past became very painful, making walking difficult. After taking the remedy the pain in her side disappeared and the pain in her ankle reduced dramatically. Since taking the remedy she had been dreaming about things related to the earthquakes. She had flashbacks and frightening feelings about the first quake, which had violently woken everyone in the early hours while they were sleeping. Whenever she gets the ‘flu, she always experiences chest complications afterwards, but after taking the remedy she experienced no complications at all. For the past few months she had been experiencing a strange kind of sighing as she exhaled and this completely disappeared as well. This ‘sighing respiration’ is a characteristic symptom of Gelsemium. Another two powerful earthquakes stuck Christchurch on Monday 13th of this month. The pains in her left side returned during the night and were so bad she could hardly move. I repeated Gelsemium 1M and she also took a painkiller. Her symptoms again disappeared in the course of the next day.
Gelsemium is a remedy which belongs to the Loganiaceae family of plants. It is a well known remedy for flu-like illnesses with symptoms of heaviness, paralysis, spasms. It has a specific affinity for the muscles. It has the characteristic sensation of a dry mouth, though the mouth is in fact not as dry as it feels. The central feeling of this family of remedies is that of having undergone something shocking and upsetting. Gelsemium is specifically for the feeling of a ‘fearful’ (Gelsemium) shock (Loganiaceae). In this instance Gelsemium seems to have alleviated some quite severe symptoms of pain and discomfort in an effective and gentle way.
