68
year old female Mrs. N. M. (Patient reference number S2665), reported
to the clinic for complaints of sleeplessness since last 2 years. She
would frequently wake up in the middle of the night for no apparent
reason and would have difficulty in falling back to sleep again. Her
sleep would not be sound and she would wake up feeling quite
unrefreshed. She said that lots of thoughts on the mind would prevent
her from falling asleep.
She also had complaints of pain in both
her knees; the pain was more pronounced on the left side and would be
worse on initial movements and standing for a long time. She would feel
somewhat better by walking about. Apart from this she would also develop
dyspepsia and flatulence once in a while.
She was a known
diabetic and was on regular anti-diabetic drugs. She was not on any
other medication for any of her other complaints.
She was a short
and stout lady with a normal appetite and thirst. She was a vegetarian
and was fond of spicy foods. She had aversion to sour and salty things.
She was sensitive to cold in general and would prefer warm water for a
bath. She would always take covering during sleep and would prefer a
thick covering on her feet.
She stayed in a joint family with her
husband, son, daughter and in-laws. She was a very timid lady and was
very sensitive to scolding and rude words. She said that she would keep
brooding about this for a long time. She said that she would always feel
the need to express her discontentment or else she would not feel
comfortable. She had a tendency to weep easily and would feel very much
better after being consoled. She was very loquacious and would speak
very elaborately in general.
Based on the above history, she was
prescribed Calcarea fluoricum 200 and another remedy that has been
developed at Lifeforce for the treatment of insomnia. She was also given
a single dose of Medorrhinum 1M. She was also asked to get an X-ray of
both her knees done and report to us after 2 weeks. At the next visit,
she reported that her sleep was much better in these 2 weeks. She could
sleep at a stretch without having to wake up in between and would wake
up feeling fresh in the morning. She felt more peaceful now and the
crowding of thoughts in her mind before sleep had reduced marginally.
Her X-Ray of both the knees showed changes of Osteoarthritis on both
sides. She reported that her knee pain had reduced to some extent and
she was much more comfortable in performing her daily activities. She
was informed that the changes seen on the X-ray were irreversible but
she would definitely experience significant pain relief with the
medication. Her treatment was continued on similar lines till her sleep
was completely normal and her knee pain considerably controlled.
